A North Carolina Tradition

More Than a Century of American Chairmaking

Troutman Chair Company was established in 1924 in Troutman, North Carolina. What began as a family-run furniture company became part of a long regional tradition of producing solid wood chairs, rockers, stools, and tables.

In 1999, Champ and Jean Land purchased Troutman Chair Company and continued making furniture using many of the same time-honored methods that had defined the company for generations. The product line has grown over the years, but the emphasis remains on American manufacturing, solid wood, traditional construction, and practical furniture made for everyday life.

How Troutman Furniture Is Made

From the Sawmill to the Finished Chair

Troutman controls much of its manufacturing process in North Carolina, combining locally supplied hardwood with construction methods that are increasingly uncommon in modern furniture production.

Furniture-making equipment at Troutman Chair Company
01

On-Site Sawmill

Oak logs are brought to Troutman from local loggers and milled at the company's own sawmill before the lumber is cut, stacked, and dried.

02

Swelled-Joint Construction

Carefully controlled moisture differences allow smaller wooden components to swell while larger posts contract, creating exceptionally tight joints.

03

Interlocking Joinery

Front and back chair frames are joined so the construction mechanically locks together instead of depending on simple surface connections.

04

No Glue Construction

Troutman's traditional chair construction uses swelled joints and interlocking joinery rather than relying on glue to hold the chair frame together.
