Know what you are measuring
The letters below match the comparison rows. Overall height is measured from the floor to the top of the chair, not from the seat to the top of the back.
Will it fit my table?
- Measure the tabletop height from the floor, then compare it with the chair’s seat height.
- Check the lowest underside. Measure floor to the bottom of the apron or frame. Subtract seat height to find the space above the seat, and allow for your thighs and any cushion.
- Measure between the table legs. Overall chair width and depth matter for tucking in and moving the chair. Seat width alone does not establish clearance.
- Check the room around the table. Allow space to pull the chair out and sit down.
Will it fit me comfortably?
- Start with a chair you like. Compare its seat height, usable width and usable depth with the dimensions above.
- Check your feet. Notice whether they rest comfortably when you sit back.
- Check behind your knees. The front edge should not press into them when your back is supported.
- Compare the seat style too. Shape, material and any added cushion affect how a chair feels. Measurements help narrow the choice; comfort is personal.
